Parkinson’s disease patients often experience depression and anxiety. These symptoms can be just as disruptive for patients and families as the motor aspects of the disease. Addressing these non-motor symptoms through mindfulness, meditation and Emotional Freedom Technique (aka Tapping) can reduce the feelings of stress and anxiety in patients.  These techniques are helpful to caregivers as well.  There can be a sense of hopelessness for both the patient and their families, as PD is a progressive disease.  There is no turning back. However, getting emotional support can make the PD experience a little easier to manage.

Tapping can stimulate brain function and rewire neuropathways in the brain without invasive implants or electrodes.  This all natural technique uses “tapping” with your fingertips on meridian endpoints in the body.  Tapping is a mind-body technique that stimulates the brain (cognitive thoughts,) the nervous system (the fight or flight response to perceived fear,) and the energy systems in the body (the energy centers around fear, safety, etc) to effectively reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.

Tapping on Parkinson’s, specifically, allows you to voice, honor, and acknowledge the feelings you have about this disease.  It’s not comfortable to discuss these feelings in most situations, but in a session, you have a safe space to speak those hidden thoughts and feelings.

Some topics to address with Tapping include:

Fears

Frustration

Feelings of Hoplessness

Loss of independence

Sadness

Saying out loud “It’s not fair,” “I hate this disease,” “I’m afraid,” “My body won’t do what I want it to,” “I hate watching this happen to my (loved one),” helps to move energy that can otherwise be trapped and stuck in your body.  Voicing these thoughts while tapping activates the nervous system, reduces cortisol (a stress hormone in the body) and creates peace and calm in the system, in just minutes!
